Introduction
This deliverable represents the collection of the content that was produced in the AVALON project. This document helps readers to find and use these resources.
By the nature of the project a wide range of content has been produced and is available on different platforms. This content is available after the end of the project as it is intended to maintain the content. However some services that are not under our control might be discontinued at some time in the future. This is the reason why we feed copies into the repository.
Available Content from the Avalon-project
This is the translation of the deliverable-description as provided in the AVALON proposal (included on the first page of this document) and the reference to the place where one can find the related component.

Creation and maintenance of contents
In order to run a live learning event a lot of different content needs to be in place. This section discusses the creation of new as well as the re-use of existing content (e.g. from the Avalon project).
special contents
media format
purpose
tool
landmark |
locate a specific place in a 3D environment, e.g. the venue of a action learning event like for AVALON: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/AVALON%20LEARNING/12/206/77 |
maps.secondlife.com or create a landmark "in world" (the 3D environment)
notecard
are text information and is used to distribute persistent information "in world" (the 3D environment) |
type or copy & paste from text editor
scripts
performs certain animations within the 3D environment, see http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/LSL_Portal |
use a software development environment with support of mono and the linden script language
2D contents
media format
purpose
tool
PPT slides (export to jpg)
Have a presentation done in a 3D environment
office suite (powerpoint, etc.) and export slides in jpg or png format (to be uploaded to a slide presenter). Alternatively export to a web-site and include it using the url to the website (and an embedded web-media screen in the 3D environment)
textures
give 3D objects a visual surface. The quality of the textures determines the quality of the visual impression of any 3D scenario
photoshop (professional use) or gimp (open source tool)
clothing |
clothings of an avatar is a special form of texture, where template requirement are to be considered see http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Clothing_Tutorials |
see textures |
terrain (RAW) |
the landscape is determined by a special texture which includes additional meta information (e.g. height of the landscape, applied texture, etc.) see http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Tips_for_Creating_Heightfields_and_Details_on_Terrain_RAW_Files |
see textures, additional terrain editors are available |
sculpties |
specific complex 3D objects are actually modelled in 2D format (e.g. a vase, ...), see http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Sculpted_Prims:_3d_Software_Guide |
see textures |
animations |
complex animation and gestures, e.g. walking, running, jumping, etc. of an avatar are modeled in a specific format |
poser |

3D contents
media format
purpose
tool
second life specific 3D model
to create the 3D environment in which live action learning events take place. It not only creates the 3D model but places and arranges all other media as well.
second life client in build mode, different alternate viewers, opensim-exports, blender with secondlife pluging
Streaming Media
Streaming media might be created before a course (preparing a learning scenario) or live by capturing a action learning event.
pre-production of streaming media
media format
purpose
tool
audio clips see http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Sound_Clips |
to be used to create a rich 3D environment including sounds from objects (e.g. from nature, machinery or other objects one expect to produce sound)
recording tools, e.g. audio recorder included in a PC operation system
streamed audio clips
to be streamed live to the 3D environment creating a background sound (e.g. music)
recording see above, but delivered using a web streaming service
streamed video clips (this method is rarely used because the stream is hard to control and has a significant latency)
to be streamed live to the 3D environment creating a background sound (e.g. video for a video wall)
delivered using a web streaming service
live production of streaming media
media format
purpose
tool
video clips (different formats) |
to capture a scenario for later processing, e.g. to produce feedback (video), machinimas or documentation.
fraps, camtasia, IshowU (Mac)
streaming video
live broadcasting of a scenario to share with others, see also WP4 GUI configuration handbook
broadcaster (plus a receiving streaming server), UStream.com, screen-sharing services, etc.
social media
Not covered in the initial AVALON proposal, social media played a significant role during the AVALON project. These contents primarily were produced in the AVALON wiki, the ning and in youtube and blib.tv (for links see the content overview section above).
Access to created contents
Official released deliverables
Using the the official homepage http://www.avalonlearning.eu , especially look for the "open source portal" section with the structured directory of the contents.
Long-term archive access
Information about the long-term archive can be found in the WP4-1 deliverable, see WP4-1 Repository for 2D and 3D object
List with technical 2D and 3D content
some of the contents develped sorted by content type:
Use of contents in live action learning events
To make contents technically usable in live learning events we introduced a "2D and 3D integration" which helps to manage contents in class efficiently (import 3D objects), see WP4-2 2D – 3D Integration
