Here you will find a list of some of the important terms used in relation to virtual worlds in general and Second Life in particular. It is constantly being updated and is by no means comprehensive.

 

 


 

Avatar

An Avatar is a representative of a real person in the virtual world.

 

Banlines

Lines of floating red letters spelling out “no entry” that appears on the boundaries of a land parcel that your avatar is not allowed to enter

 

Bot

Short for Robot is an avatar which is controlled by a machine, rather than by a human.

 

Chatlog

Transcript of chat which can be saved on to your computer

Community Gateway  

Community Gateway (CG) is a starting point for new residents of SL which is not maintained by Linden Lab, but by an established community in SL

 

Detach

To remove an item that has been attached to a specific part of the avatar’s body and return it to inventory.

 

Group

A group in Second Life is an organisation which consits of at least two residents

 

holodeck

A product used to save different forms of content (either furniture settings or even an entire environment). This allows you to rez complex enviroments very easily

 

Home

Home is the location that you teleport to when you choose the menu item "Teleport Home". You can choose this location yourself.

 

HUD

Heads-Up-Display. A HUD typically consists of a control panel with different buttons you can click on to do context-specific stuff such as playing a presentation with many slides.

 

IM

Instant Messaging- allows you to send private messages to others

Inventory

Your Inventory is the collection of all the stored Second Life items that you own or have access to.

 

Inworld

When you are present inside a virtual world environment.

In real life

In virtual life

Lag

Lag is the colloquial name for slow reaction time in a particular online environment

 

Linden Dollars

The unit of currency for all monetary transactions in Second Life. One Euro is approximately equivalent to 350-370 Linden Dollars

 

Macinima

Machine-Cinema: The art of filming in virtual worlds.

Mouselook

Mouselook, allows you to see Second Life from a 1st-person perspective — "through your avatar's eyes.

 

Mute

Silencing your own or somebody else’s voice

MUVE

Multi user virtual environment- often in the form of virtual worlds such as SL or World of Warcraft.

Note card

Is a inventory item containing text. You can make note cards and pass on to thers.

 

Orientation Island

The first place to which you arrive when you enter SL for the first time.

Parcel

An area of land owned by a single user or group.

 

Prim

Or Primitive, is an object in SL. Things in SL are built of one or several such prims and a certain space will only allow so many Prims when it’s constructed.

Rez

The term used for when objects and avatars are appearing. The term is also used for when you make something appear by dragging it from you inventory to the in-world environment.

SIM

Often refers to a certain region in Second Life

Skin

A texture image that replaces the default skin of your avatar

 

SLT- Second Life Time

Same as Pacific Standard Time

 

SLurl

A url which gives the location to a place in Second Life

Streaming Media

Music and video that may be heard and viewed on a parcel. 

 

Teen Grid

Second Life for under 18 users which unfortunately is being shut down.

Teleporting

When you click on a SLurl you will transfer from one in-world location to another instantly- this is known as teleporting.

Viewer

The Second Life Interface- note that are big differences between Viewer 1 and 2. Both are still an option.

Welcome area

The place you first arrive to when you follow a SLurl to a parcel.
